Structural construction works at BNP Paribas Fortis site nearing completion

The new headquarters of BNP Paribas Fortis, located on Montagne du Parc in Brussels, literally shot out of the ground in 2019. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic the site had to be temporarily shut down in order to ensure the safety of all employees. The site was reopened on 27 April and – despite the difficulties associated with protective measures taken against the virus – is gradually getting back up to cruising speed.

White columns as an eye-catcher
The installation of the white columns forming the exoskeleton, which makes the building so unique on the outside, was completed at the end of February. The dismantling of the first tower cranes is scheduled for June, after which the other works on the building will begin. The exterior joinery is in its final phase, with the façades slated for completion by the end of June 2020 so as to make the building weathertight. Underground primary technical installations are largely complete, while work on the floors is still ongoing. Work on the lift has also been started.

Filled reservoirs
In May 2020, the reservoirs of the Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage (STES) system were finally filled up after six months of continuous pumping. In total, almost 14,000 m³ of water was drawn from below the water table to help heat and cool the building based on a geothermal energy solution.

Interior fittings
Now that the columns forming the exoskeleton have been installed, in the coming months the focus will be on the fittings inside the building and on the installation of technical elements such as pipes, conduits for the air conditioning, heat pumps, tiling, etc. Some atypical spaces (like the auditorium and the atrium) will be given a finish that highlights these exceptional works. Various teams are working on these areas to respect the proposed timing. In addition, various mock-ups are being presented to the client, both for the interior and exterior finishing. The mock-up offices and the model for the sanitary facilities were already delivered in February, to the client’s satisfaction.
