The demolition and reconstruction of the canal bridge in Viersel was necessary to make the Albert Canal navigable over its entire length for four-layer container ships. A free navigable height of 9 m 10 is required for this. The current bridge was replaced by a new steel arch bridge almost two metres taller with a larger span of 118 metres. The canal was also widened from 50 to 86 metres in a subsequent phase. The bridge features two lanes, a two-way cycling path on the eastern side of the road and a footpath on the other side.
